Aoki Seminar: Professor Eric Rauchway "Civil Rights and the FDR Administration, Revisited"_4/2/2019

This week's Aoki Interdisciplinary Research Seminar features Professor Eric Rauchway from the UC Davis History Department. Today’s presentation is titled: "Civil Rights and the FDR Administration, Revisited" "The New Deal was the project of a Democratic administration beholden to segregationist voters and the effect of racism on its policies is well known. Less well known is the Roosevelt administration's role of inaugurating the major era of federal civil rights enforcement after Reconstruction. I will discuss some evidence recently acquired via Freedom of Information Act requests, along with other archival material, that discusses the context, motives, and consequences of this early federal support for civil and, specifically, voting rights."
