Bill Smith Memorial Lecture Tues, January 30, 2018 "The Small 't' in LGBT: Transgender and Gender Expansive Children as a Vulnerable Population" Dr. Diane Ehrensaft, Ph.D. Developmental and Clinical Psychologist Dr. Ehrensaft will discuss who the little “t” population is, why they are uniquely vulnerable, the political and ideological battles surrounding Gender Expansive/Transgender/Gender Expansive Children, and how attorneys can learn to best protect and advocate for this population and their rights. Diane Ehrensaft, Ph.D. is an associate professor of Pediatrics at the University of California San Francisco and a developmental and clinical psychologist in the San Francisco Bay Area, with a private practice in Oakland, California, where she specializes in work with gender creative children and their families. She is Director of Mental Health of the Child and Adolescent Gender Center and chief psychologist at the Child and Adolescent Gender Center Clinic at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital. She specializes in research, clinical work, and consultation related to gender diverse children and assisted reproductive technology families, lecturing, publishing, doing media appearances, and serving as an expert witness on both topics nationally and internationally. She is author of The Gender Creative Child; Gender Born, Gender Made; Mommies Daddies Donors, Surrogates; Building a Home Within (co-edited with Toni Heineman); Spoiling Childhood, and Parenting Together; The Gender Affirmative Model: A New Approach to Supporting Gender Non-Conforming and Transgender Children, co-edited with Dr. Colt Keo-Meier, to be released in 2018. She is also presently co-investigator in a four-site National Institute of Health longitudinal study investigating the effects of puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones in a population of youth seeking services at the four university-based gender clinics. She is a member of the World Professional and US Professional Association for Transgender Health, and a member of the board of directors of Gender Spectrum, as well as a a founding member and board member of A Home Within, a national organization dedicated to the emotional needs of children in foster care. About the Bill Smith Memorial Lecture The Bill Smith Memorial Lecture honors the memory of Bill Smith ’98 who passed in 2001. During Bill’s short time with us, he dedicated himself to disability and LGBT rights activism. The Lecture is our way of honoring his memory, both by highlighting a powerful voice in the disability or LGBT rights arena and by awarding a small summer grant to a 1L or 2L law student doing nonprofit legal work in either of those areas.
