Wednesday, September 7 Kalmanovitz Appellate Courtroom 3:00 PM Theane Evangelis Kapur with the law firm of Gibson Dunn & Crutcher LLP gave a presentation on the highly publicized federal challenge to Prop. 8, which amended the California Constitution to eliminate marriage rights for same-sex couples. Ms. Kapur and her law firm are representing the plaintiffs in the case, who claim that Prop. 8 violates the right to equality and the fundamental right to marry guaranteed by the United States Constitution. On August 4, 2010, a federal judge in San Francisco struck down Prop. 8 on grounds that it violates the federal Constitution, and that decision is currently on hold pending an appeal. Ms. Kapur provides an inside perspective on this groundbreaking case and its implications. Theane Evangelis Kapur is part of the legal team representing the plaintiffs in the pending federal constitutional challenge to California's ban on same-sex marriage, Proposition 8. An appellate and general commercial litigation associate in the Los Angeles office of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, Ms. Kapur has been a law clerk to Justice Sandra Day O'Connor of the U.S. Supreme Court and Chief Judge Alex Kozinski of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. She has also been an associate with Los Angeles firm Ziffren Brittenham and worked as a staffer for former Congressman Max Sandlin.
