Aoki Seminar: Professor Jeff Keohane “It’s the Little Things that Kill You; some case studies in California Indian Affairs in the Obama Administration.” 10/9/2018

The Interdisciplinary Research Seminar Series featuring Professor Jeff Keohane, who is teaching Federal Indian Law this semester here at King Hall. His talk is titled, “It’s the Little Things that Kill You; some case studies in California Indian Affairs in the Obama Administration.” “Despite one-half century of high-flown rhetoric of respect for Native American sovereignty and self-determination adopted by the federal government, and arguably the most-tribal friendly, and best-run Indian Affairs administration at the Department of the Interior, the Obama years saw the continuation of Interior’s treatment of Indian country as a collection of colonies superintended by federal bureaucrats. From political appointees down to entry level bureaucrats—ironically drawn from the membership of federally recognized tribes—routinely take advantage of their power over federal funding, their virtual anonymity, and the extreme deference they receive from the courts to change tribal governments, change the composition of tribal membership, and steer tribal policies.”
