Aoki Center Presents: Dr. Lawrence Winn “My President was Black…So What!: Sociopolitical Realities of Black Youth Males” 2/6/2018

Please join Dr. Lawrence Winn for his presentation: “My President was Black…So What!: Sociopolitical Realities of Black Youth Males” During the years 2008 through 2016, Black youth males received a substantial amount of attention from the news media, politicians, civil rights activists, and policy makers. More specifically, Black males disproportionately experienced sanctioned-state violence and police brutality (Hill, 2016), mass incarceration (DuVernay, 2016; Alexander, 2010) and suspensions and expulsions from public schools (Winn and Winn, 2014; Laura, 2014, Losen and Skiba, 2010) making them the center of attention. Coincidently, these years overlapped with the presidency of Barack Obama, the first African American elected President of the United States of America. During such a historical and momentous time, not only America but also the world, what were the experiences of Black males with schools, law enforcement, and community organizations. What hope did they have for the American Dream? The Interdisciplinary Seminar Series You’re cordially invited to join us for the Aoki Center’s Spring 2018 Interdisciplinary Research Seminar Series. You’ll have the opportunity to learn from, and discuss with, interdisciplinary scholars who will present their research and works in progress which are inspired by, and build upon, critical race studies.
